Stroke Unit Volunteers

We are looking for long-term volunteers who can spare some time during the week between 11.30am and 2pm.

The aim of the volunteer is to encourage patients to interact with others and get used to normal daily activities such as eating in company.

Tasks include:

  • Making sure the day room is tidy
  • Checking board for list of patients using the day room for lunch
  • Escorting patients to the day room
  • Helping patients lay dinner table
  • Helping patients open food and drink packaging if they indicate they require it
  • Cutting up food if patients indicate they require it
  • Sitting with patients during the meal, talk and offer encouragement
  • Clearing table and getting patients involved if possible
  • Tidying day room with help of those patients who are able
  • Endeavouring to build patients' confidence in their own abilities to cope with varying situations

Volunteers will not be required to:

  • help with toileting tasks
  • cut up food for patients unless they indicate they would like help
  • feed patients
