Foundation Doctors 2011
- Welcome
-
Before starting your Foundation Year 1 post you need to attend a shadowing week and complete induction. This week begins on Wednesday 27th July 2011, during which you will shadow the outgoing FY1 (usually the one you are replacing) and have the chance to familiarise yourselves with the job you are about to start.
You will also have the opportunity to meet the team in which you will be working as well as nursing staff, ward clerks and nurse specialists. During this week you will complete an ALERT (Acute life threatening events- recognition and treatment) course and be introduced to the IT systems within the hospital that allow you to request investigations and look up results.
Induction ensures that you are aware of the many governance and safety issues that every NHS trust must comply with. It is mandatory and important and you cannot start your job without completing the full program.
You will be expected to absorb a great deal of information within the shadowing week and it would be sensible to familiarise yourself with the programme and complete some of the web based competencies beforehand.
I hope that you will feel welcomed to Dorset County, the doctors mess organises numerous social events including a junior vs consultant cricket match in the shadowing week.
My colleagues and I in the Education centre look forward to meeting you on 27th July 2011. Please do take the time to come into the office and introduce yourself. We can provide you with help and advice on a wide range of issues not just related to education and training.

Doctors in Training Welcome – NOT F1s
Welcome
I would like to extend a warm welcome to you and invite you to attend an induction on your first day of employment here at Dorset County Hospital.
The idea of the induction is to start familiarising yourself with systems which are in place in this Trust and which enable the organisation to run as smoothly as possible.
You will also have the opportunity to meet with your colleagues and others with whom you will be working. Please note that attendance at induction is now an essential requirement for all employees.
Induction will commence at 7.45am on Wednesday, 3rd August 2011 in the Thomas Sydenham Education Centre, Dorset County Hospital. There will also be lunchtime inductions on Thursday and Friday of that week which cover the mandatory training that is required.
I look forward to meeting you then.
Yours sincerely
Dr W McConnell
Associate Director of Medical Education
