Dr Will McConnell

Qualifications:

Background:
• Brought up in Liverpool. Undertook preclinical training in Cambridge and clinical in Oxford. House officer posts in Northampton and Oxford in the Nuffield Department of Medicine. Medical SHO rotation at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford. Respiratory Registrar rotation in Wessex at Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Southampton. Undertook two and a half years of research in University Medicine, Southampton General Hospital, investigating airway remodelling in asthma.
• Since 2001, I have been a Respiratory and general physician in Dorset County Hospital. I have been active in trying to improve respiratory services in the hospital and in the community, particularly with regard to COPD services in the community, but also with regard to asthma, sleep services and TB. I have developed a pulmonary physiologist-delivered interstitial lung disease clinic. I also lead on the management of pulmonary emboli and DVTs within the hospital.
• I am also heavily involved in the organisation and delivery of junior doctor training in the hospital, since I have been the medical College Tutor and the Foundation Programme Director and the Director of Medical Education. I am a Visiting Fellow at Bournemouth University and have an interest in the development of professionalism in junior doctors.
• I have been the Divisional Director for Medicine since 2015.

Background: 
After training at Bristol University I undertook my house job at Exeter and Derriford before undertaking a medical SHO rotation at Exeter. I was an SHO in Poole and an ITU SHO at Portsmouth. I undertook my specialist respiratory training in the Wessex and South West Deaneries.

I worked at Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury as a consultant for five years before relocating to Dorchester and Dorset County Hospital.

I am the lung cancer lead and have set up our pleural service. I am passionate about improving the care of our patients with lung cancer and streamlining the patient pathway.
