Eye Department

Welcome to Dorset County Hospital's eye (ophthalmology) department, also known as the Royal Eye Infirmary.

We are located on Level 0, Entrance 2, East Wing, behind the large blue and red sculpture known as 'The Pencils'.

This is a very busy department dealing with some 22,600 appointments, 4,000 procedures and 1,600 operations a year.  Most frequently encountered conditions such as age related maculopathy, diabetic retinopathy, cataract etc. are treated in Dorchester and we have good connections with specialist centres if referral is needed for complex conditions.

Most clinics for children take place in the Children's Centre which is about 100 yards south of the main eye department.

We offer appointments only clinics, not a 'walk in' service and would advise patients to consult their optician, general medical practitioner or minor injury unit for initial treatment and possible referral.
