Critical Care: Intensive Care and High Dependency

The Critical Care Unit (CrCU) at Dorset County Hospital has two areas:

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

The Intensive Care Unit provides intensive and high–dependency services for up to four critically ill patients. It is situated on Level 2 in the hospital’s South Wing. Please follow the signs from the South 1 entrance.

High Dependency Unit (HDU)

The High Dependency Unit can take up to five patients who need a high level of medical and nursing care for a variety of reasons. The High Dependency Unit is situated on Level 2, South Wing.

When you arrive

When you arrive at the unit, please ring the bell. Because of the kind of work we do there may be a short delay, but we will do our best to respond to you quickly.

Visiting

ICU: 12pm - 8pm (or at the discretion of the shift co-ordinator)

HDU: 12pm - 2pm, 5pm - 7pm

Rest is vital to a patient’s recovery, so we ask that only two family members are present at the bedside at any one time. We will do our best to accommodate children’s visits: please talk with the nursing staff.

We will always negotiate visiting times if families have particular needs or a patient's condition warrants visiting outside the usual times.
