Here at Dorset County Hospital, we take a holistic approach to our patients who are preparing for their surgery. Having surgery is often compared to running a marathon - you need to prepare for it.

We believe that all patients coming in for major surgery such as a joint replacement, removal of gallbladder or as part of their cancer treatment should take steps to improve their body and mind prior to surgery.

There are small things you can do to reduce the risk of complications and increase your chance of a faster recovery.

This section of our website provides information to help you prepare for surgery and achieve the best possible outcome.

Reducing the risk of complications

Complications which can occur after surgery include:

  • chest infections
  • blood clots
  • kidney problems
  • confusion / delirium
  • slow wound healing

We want to help you reduce the risk of any complications. The Fitter, Better, Sooner video from the Royal College of Anaesthetists explains how you can prepare for your surgery and reduce the risk of complications
