GEM Awards 2019


The GEM (Going the Extra Mile) Awards are open for nominations until 29 March 2019.​

Please get nominating for those staff and volunteers that have gone the extra mile so that they can be recognised for the fantastic work they do.

Awards Categories

Chairman's Award
This award recognises the individual who has made the most significant impact during the year and:

is committed to quality of care and achieved outstanding success in their job;

has made an exceptional contribution to clinical or non-clinical service provision in a way that adds significantly to the organisation, patients or other staff

has shown tangible evidence of change and/or improvement that enhances the Trust's reputation

demonstrates the Trust values 

Team of the Year Award
This award recognises the team that has demonstrated its effectiveness in working exceptionally well together and with other teams.  Nominations must show that the team has:

demonstrated significant achievements and commitment

effectively worked with other teams and promoted excellent co-operative working relationships

provided an inspirational example to others

demonstrates the Trust values 

Leadership Award
This award recognises leadership approaches that demonstrate a positive and sustained positive impact on patients and staff.  Including:

a focus on innovation and improvement to facilitate change and provide value for money

full engagement with staff and an opportunity for those using the service to determine how it is delivered

led positive team spirit in a challenging environment

demonstrates Trust values

Innovation Award
This individual or team award recognises creativity and new ideas that deliver improved services or products and/or reduce inefficiency.  In addition to the core criteria, the awards panel will be looking for evidence of:

an innovative change that has resulted in services or products that meet the needs of the future as well as the present day

changes to the people or roles involved in delivering services or products and when, where or how they are delivered

gains in performance or efficiency

demonstrates the Trust values

Volunteer Award
This award recognises the volunteer who has:

acted as an exemplary role model for volunteering

demonstrated a positive attitude, regularly contributing to the wider team

made a significant impact on the people and service they support

demonstrates the Trust values

Patient Safety Award
This individual or team award recognises the best patient safety initiative undertaken by a team or individual.  Nominations for this award must show:

how the need to make changes and improvements to practice was identified

the clarity of the project's objectives and how they were communicated to others

how effectively learning from the project has been disseminated within the organisation

demonstrates the Trust values

Patient Choice Award
This award is presented to the member of staff who has received outstanding feedback from patients this year and has demonstrated Trust values as nominated through Hospital Heroes.

Lifetime Achievement Award
This award recognises an individual who has made a significant difference to patient care over the lifetime of their career.  The individual will be selected for this award on the basis of:

being highly regarded by their profession as an expert in their field

an inspiration to others to make a positive contribution

being perceived by patients and staff as making a real difference to the Trust and the wider NHS

this award can only be won once by each individual

demonstrates the Trust values

Student/Apprentice of the Year
This category is open to all students or apprentices studying up to diploma level or equivalent and includes both clinical and non-clinical staff. Nominations are open to any student who has:

demonstrated outstanding commitment to personal development and progression through their learning

gone beyond expectations in delivering measurable benefits in their department/service area

achieved exemplary results in their studies

demonstrates the Trust values​
