​Coronavirus Support and Offers

Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, fearful or anxious at the moment is a completely normal response for all of us to this situation. Managing your stress and psychological health at this time is as important as your physical health. Taking care of your basic needs and employing helpful coping strategies are top priorities.

Your Emotional and Mental Wellbeing

You can read the latest Government guidance on the mental health and wellbeing aspects of Covid-19 here. This includes information for at-risk groups such as people with existing mental health conditions, people with learning disabilities, and those living with dementia.

It is normal to feel stressed in this situation. Take care of yourself: rest and get outdoors when you can, eat regular healthy meals, and stay in touch with your family and friends. You can also try one of the wellbeing apps currently available for free to NHS staff (see below) or try our relaxation sessions (see below).

Be kind to yourself and colleagues - It's ok not to be ok.

If you are struggling, please: 

  • Talk to your manager or a colleague

  • Speak to a Mental Health First Aider

  • Call Care First for advice and support 24 hours a day on 0800 174 319. 

  • Call the new NHS staff wellbeing line, for free support, signposting and confidential listening from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week on 0300 131 7000. You can also text FRONTLINE to 85258 for support 24/7 via text.

Our NHS People - A new website providing resources to help you manage your own health whilst looking after others.

Help for Heroes - to support NHS staff, Help for Heroes have been asked to contribute their expertise to a package of support. They are making these resources available on their website to support health workers around the UK in preparing for and dealing with traumatic experiences. Their Field Guide to Self-Care is available here.

Food and Essentials

Local Supermarkets
Co-op, Trinity Street, Dorchester - NHS staff can use the store between 6am and 7am and 8pm and 11pm Monday to Saturday. These times will not be open to the public so staff will need to ring 01305 257046 on arrival and will need to show their ID badge. 

Iceland Dorchester - offering a special hour for NHS staff from 5pm to 6pm Monday to Friday. NHS ID badge must be shown.

Morrisons - open 7am until 8am Monday to Saturday exclusively for NHS Staff. NHS ID badge required for entry to store.
NEW: Morrisons are also offering 10% discount to NHS staff on production of their badge at the checkout until 30th September. This now also applies to online orders.

Sainsbury's - NHS and Social Care staff will be eligible for priority shopping between 7.30am and 8am Monday to Saturday before the store opens. Staff will need to show their ID badge.

Tesco Dorchester - NHS staff can use the store from 9am until 10am every Sunday (the store will be closed to other customers). Payments only accepted from 10am.

Waitrose Bridport - setting aside 'hard to find' essentials for NHS staff. Staff will need to show their ID badge.

Waitrose Dorchester - Waitrose in Dorchester town centre have set aside 'hard to find' essentials exclusively for NHS staff. Staff will need to show their ID badge. 

Waitrose Poundbury - have set up a dedicated area in the store for NHS staff only. The store will be open from 9am to 9pm. Staff will need to show their ID badge. 

National Supermarket Opening Hours for NHS Staff:

·        Sainsbury's - every day from 7.30am to 8am

·        Asda - Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8am to 9am

·        Tesco - every Sunday, priority browsing hour before checkouts open.

·        Co-operative - Monday to Saturday, 8am to 9am, Sunday, 10am to 11am.

·        Marks and Spencer - Tuesday and Friday for the first hour of opening.

·        Morrisons - Monday to Saturday for the first hour of opening.

·        Iceland - Monday to Friday for the final hour of trading.

·        Aldi - open 30 minutes early on Sundays for NHS, police and fire service.

NEW: Dorset Council has a dedicated helpline to assist people of all ages with access to food shopping and delivery, collecting medicine, dog walking, befriending and more during this COVID-19 situation. If you need help, please call 01305 221000, 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week or email communityresponse@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk. You can also visit their website at https://www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/coronavirus.

If you have a specific care requirement, call the Adult Social Care team on 01305 221016 and they can talk with you about how you can be best supported. 

Healthy Start Vouchers - if you are pregnant or have a child under four years old you could get Healthy Start vouchers to help buy some basic foods. This important means-tested scheme provides vouchers to spend with local retailers. Pregnant women and children over one and under four years old can get one £3.10 voucher per week. Children under one year old can get two £3.10 vouchers (£6.20) per week. This is an ongoing government scheme.

The vouchers can be spent on:

  • plain cow’s milk – whole, semi-skimmed or skimmed. It can be pasteurised, sterilised, long life or UHT
  • plain fresh or frozen fruit and veg (fruit and vegetables with no added ingredients), whole or chopped, packaged or loose
  • infant formula milk that says it can be used from birth and is based on cow’s milk.

Child Care

Sunny Days Nursery Poundbury - open for key workers children only aged between three months and 11 years and offering 10% off. Child will get breakfast, hot two-course meal plus drinks and snacks. Parents are also eligible for a free takeaway tea or coffee when dropping their child off and free takeaway dinner for collecting in the evening.

Tops Day Nurseries - remains open for children from 0 – 5yrs from 6am until 8pm and will give priority to children of NHS workers. They may also be able to accommodate children 5 -11yrs. Sunninghill Prep School, Dorchester - has six spaces in their holiday club for children between the age of 6 -13yrs (could take from 4 but ideally 6). The charge would be £35 per day, but they have said they are happy to negotiate on a case-by-case basis. They are currently open 8.30am until 4.430pm Monday to Friday, but are ready to go to seven days a week if needed. Help with Maths during School Closures - National Numeracy is offering free activities to help families keep up with their maths together during school closures following the coronavirus outbreak. The pack, containing 28 activities for children aged between 4 and 11, can be downloaded here.

Practical Support

National Health Supporters - a directory for known networks of medical, nursing and allied healthcare students across the country assisting NHS staff with their needs. The aim is for students to help alleviate pressures on NHS staff including, but not exclusive to: childcare; grocery shopping; and pet sitting. There are volunteers available now in the West Dorset area. Click here for more information.

Cyber Safety - the Trust's security vendor Sophos is offering free copies of its commercial home AV software for all DCH staff up until July 2021 (at least). This licensing covers up to ten devices per user which means that staff have the option to extend this generous offering to friends and family members to utilise the maximum number of devices.

Finances

Nurses, Midwives and HCAS - Cavell Nurses' Trust has set aside additional funding for grants designed to help nursing and midwifery professionals support their living costs like rent and utility bills.

The money is available to help people in the following situations, for example:

  • A nurse, midwife or HCA being unable to work because they need to isolate themselves. This may lead to a financial crisis if they don't have access to occupational sick pay or benefits, perhaps because they are an agency worker or self-employed. They may also lose access to overtime, bank shifts or other enhancements.
  • A nurse, midwife or HCA who is facing financial hardship because their household or partner's income has been affected due to Coronavirus, perhaps because they are self-employed or work in an industry adversely affected by Coronavirus.

Wessex Water NHS Uniform Washing Rebate - in recognition of NHS workers who are washing their own uniforms at home during the current coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak, Wessex Water are providing a rebate to cover the additional water used.   

To be eligible you must: 

  • receive your water supply from Wessex Water
  • be on a water meter, and  
  • be a frontline NHS worker who is required to wash the uniform given to you by your employer.  

If you are eligible you can claim a rebate of up to £50 for each eligible NHS worker in your home which will be applied to your next water bill. To claim, simply complete the form here.

HK Solicitors and Arbitrators - throughout May HK Solicitors and Arbitrators are offering 20% discount on selected Legal Services to all care workers, NHS and emergency personnel (for new matters only). This is as a gesture of appreciation to all those 'Front Line' people who could really benefit from our legal expertise during these unusual times.

Domestic Abuse

Police and other organisations across Dorset are raising awareness around domestic abuse amid concerns it may increase over the coming weeks due to the impact of Coronavirus. Services remain open and they have contingency plans in place for refuges and community-based services. If you're worried about a loved one, or about isolating with a perpetrator, please call the National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247 or contact the Helpline via Refuge's contact form at www.nationaldahelpline.org.uk
To ensure your safety you can let them know how to contact you and what time to contact you.

In an emergency, always be ready to call 999 if you are in danger.

Spiritual Wellbeing

Staff Prayer and Fellowship Meeting - our Lead Chaplain, Ron Martin, will be in the chapel each Thursday at 1pm to pray for our hospital, its staff and patients. Any staff who wish to join him would be very welcome to join him, and can sit around the edge of the chapel keeping two metres apart.

Muslim Prayer Facilities - we have a room next to the Chapel on the third floor of South Wing which Muslim colleagues use for prayer. The room has hand and foot washing facilities and prayer mats and is accessible 24/7 to all Muslim staff. There is a key code for the door which Ron Martin, our Chaplain, can supply upon request. Muslims are also very welcome to use the hospital Chapel to say their prayers (the name is to be changed to Prayer Room soon). Please do contact Ron on 5198 or via ron.martin@dchft.nhs.uk if you would like the code to the room and its facilities or if you have any questions.

Wellbeing Apps

Sleepio - an online self-care programme based on CBT for insomnia (CBTi). It is proven to help people make lifestyle changes to improve both insomnia symptoms and mental wellbeing. Visit http://www.sleepio.com/redeem and enter redeem code NHS2020 and sign up for an account using your name and email address. Complete the sleep test and get started!

Daylight - a smartphone-based app that provides help to people experiencing symptoms of worry and anxiety, using evidence-based cognitive behavioural techniques, voice and animation. Free access until 31 December.

All you need to do is visit daylight.com/NHSaccess, sign up with your name and email address and answer a few short questions to tailor the programme to you. Then download the Daylight app (search 'Daylight - Worry Less', available on both iPhone and Android) and get started!

L of a Car - Should any staff members have any car issues resulting in them needing to replace their car, please call 01305 262265. The phone will be on divert to a mobile and we will answer and can arrange to meet them at the site if needs be.

Virtual Classes and Groups

Livewell Dorset Five Ways Challenge - virtual training programme. Based on the Five Ways to Wellbeing, the Five Ways Challenge will guide participants through five steps to greater self-care. Participants will exercise the ways to wellbeing by connecting with others virtually; taking notice of the present moment, maintaining daily physical activity, learning new skills and giving to others. More information is available at https://www.livewelldorset.co.uk/five-ways-challenge/

Ashtanga Yoga - Saileem Taibjee, a consultant here at DCH, will be offering free live-streamed Ashtanga Yoga virtual classes on Sundays from 9am to 10.5am. NEW: Train with Charmaine - she is offering all staff a free week of fitness and Pilates classes livestream via zoom in the comfort of your own home or garden. Body Blast is a 30 minute body weight fitness class, with high or low impact options. Pilates is designed to strengthen the core, correct muscular imbalances, lengthen and tone muscles and relax the mind and body. Just email charmaine@trainwithcharmaine.com to get started.
